There are significant effects of Diabetes on dental and oral health and there are effects of poor oral hygiene, infections in mouth i.e. chronic infections around roots and periodontal conditions( Gum infections) on diabetes control.

Effects of diabetes on dental and oral health:

1) Periodontal diseases

Periodontal/ gums and bone supporting teeth are affected significantly and sometimes dentist diagnose diabetes looking at bad periodontal condition. Uncontrolled blood sugar levels for long time (Hba1c) has very significant affect on gum health, causing gingivitis and periodontitis, and premature tooth loosening and loss.

2) Dental caries/ Cavities:

Diabetes causes dry mouth, reduce saliva mixed with poor hygiene makes diabetic person more prone for Cavities.

3) Poor wound healing:

High blood sugar causes reduced immune response and reduced blood supply to wound in turn causing delayed or poor healing and high risk of infections.

Effects of poor Dental And Oral health on diabetes management:

Inflammation or infection in oral cavity causes inflammation which affects body to manage the blood sugar level in turn a vicious cycle of increased infection because of high blood levels. Bacteria and there toxins are directly pushed into blood stream and can get lodged into various organs mainly heart causing many heart problems e.g. endocartitis.

So managing very good oral hygiene for a diabetic patient is very important,

Regular cleaning and treating gums and surrounding tissue infections

Treating Infected teeth by root canals or extractions

Getting all the cavities treated

Removal of infected wisdom teeth
these are the basic dental hygiene practices a diabetic patients should do.
