very common question asked in our dental office and all most all the dental offices is
WHICH IS THE BEST TOOTH BRUSH AND TOOTH PASTE?
Answer to this is simple, tooth brush is a mechanical device and tooth paste is a lubricant to avoid friction, its a better brushing technique which is more important .
CONSIDERATIONS FOR TOOTH BRUSHES
Designs of bristles:
There is quite a divided evidence in the medical literature about this some say there is no difference of design on plaque removal, some say some designs has more abrasion on enamel than others. choose your bristles design as simple as possible, flat design has least enamel wear according to one study.
Soft VS Hard:
Again there are different results regarding the hardness one of the study says soft bristles has more abrasive effect than hard one. And there is study which says there is no difference in the abrasive nature of the brushes. so what should we do we should should medium bristles hardness as adults, for kids and elderly use soft bristles.
Manual Vs Powered:
powered tooth brushes wins here in most of the studies, where very slight margins of plaque removal is mentions in one of the parameter considered. Another study shows better results in premolar and molar areas but no difference in Anteriors (front teeth).
I think most of the studies are not very well designed or sponsered.
I think powered toothbrushes are mainly meant for people who cannot brush there teeth and someone have to help them. A good Brushing technique is much superior to any design, powered or manual .

There is no divide about use of these, apart from normal brushing interproximal hygiene or cleaning aids e.g. flosses, water jets, proxabrushes, interdental brushes, are very important for the complete plaque removal and cleaning of the difficult areas.

1) Use fluoride containing tooth paste
2) Anti-sensitivity toothpastes cannot be used for caries related sensitivity.
