Dental Health neglection – its general health and financial repercussions.

DENTAL HEALTH IS GIVEN LEAST PRIOPRITY

unlike western countries dental health is neglected badly in India. Dental health is neglected not only by society in general but government, insurance companies, corporate and private healthcare setups. As a society we don’t have a habit of routine dental health checkups and maintenances like changing behavior of routine general health checkups.

NO INSURANCE AND THERE 160 SURFACES TO PROTECT

There are 32 teeth and each tooth has five surfaces and bone and gums surrounding it that means we have 32×5=160 surfaces to take care and each have a potential for very basic dental disease i.e. cavities. so we have 160 surfaces of cavities and that much financial burden.

Insurance companies are not covering dental diseases, mainly cavities and expenses around it e.g. root canal treatments and crowns on the damaged teeth. so we have 32 chances of incurring the cost of Root canal treatment and crowns, which is quite high even if the we take average cost of rural and urban settings.

THERE ARE OTHER TISSUES ALSO TO PROTECT

There are other tissues around teeth i.e. gums and bones which are also prone for diseases which not only affect the local oral health but also affects the general health e.g. cardiac health and diabetes. As oral cavity is always exposed to food which has carbohydrates chances of diseases related to carbohydrate accumulation(plaque) is very high if not maintained by home oral care and professional care at dental offices. significant amount of financial burden.

DENTAL DISESES CANNOT BE TREATED BY A PILL

Unlike most of the bacterial or viral diseases e.g. common cold, fevers which can be managed by medications, dental bacterial diseases e.g. cavities, simple or deep and gingivitis or periodontitis cannot be treated with medication alone, it requires some procedure in dental office, which involves some cost.

ONE MISSING TOOTH CAN CREATED MANY PROBLEMS

Another myth about missing few teeth, that what can happen if i miss few teeth if i have so many of them, there are consequences and they are sometime irreversible and have lot of effects.

So don’t ignore your simple cavities, gingivitis, bad odors, missing teeth, see your dentist and address them early, it can have lot of general health problem starting from Gastrointestinal issues (hyperacidity, improper digestion, nutritional deficiencies because of improper chewing), cardiac infection risks, uncontrolled diabetes. also It will have significant cost as dental materials, technology and in general maintenance of dental offices is becoming very expensive.
